Shirley Jordan Seay is a Commission on Cancer-trained independent cancer program consultant, oncology certified nurse, and certified tumor registrar. Her diverse experience makes her uniquely qualified to assist facilities with all aspects of their cancer program. She has presented numerous educational offerings to health care professionals, allied health personnel, and the community; her most recent presentations include “Preparing for a CoC Accreditation Visit,” “Update on 2009 CoC Cancer Program Standards,” and “Breast Cancer,” to name a few. She is the president of the Cleveland Cancer Registrars Association and formal education committee chair for the National Cancer Registrar Association. She is actively involved in community education and initiatives geared toward reducing cancer incidence and the promotion of screening, early detection, and proper treatment, as she believes an educated public is key to reducing the cancer burden now and in the future.

Melissa Treece is currently the coordinator of cancer registry services for ProMedica Health System, Toledo, OH. She oversees and directs the cancer data operations for this network program that accessions over 2,400 cases annually. Melissa’s career in cancer registry began in 1987 at the Medical College of Ohio, and she earned a certified tumor registrar in 1990. She has worked for several hospitals in the Toledo area over the past 20 years and has served as a consultant for hospitals in Ohio and Michigan. In addition, she has utilized her data management skills as a clinical research associate, supporting allergy and asthma clinical trials in 1991 and 1992.
Melissa was involved in the development and implementation of the cancer information management program at Owens Community College, which began in 2007. She currently serves as an adjunct instructor in the program.
Melissa is currently completing a bachelor’s degree in health care administration from the University of Toledo and plans to continue on to graduate school. Her favorite aspects of cancer registry work are implementing and incorporating new technology into the cancer registry field, training and educating registrars, and analyzing and reporting data. Melissa is extremely excited about the increased importance and utilization of cancer registry data in the clinical management of cancer.
The work of which Melissa is most proud is her five children, ages 13 to 23, who keep her active, busy, and financially challenged.

Shannon Vann has worked in disease surveillance for more than 20 years with the majority of that time spent at cancer registry work. She currently manages the education and training program for the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, and in that position designs and acts as faculty for training activities. As the field staff supervisor for the Iowa Cancer Registry and for the Illinois State Cancer Registry, she designed and presented training activities for registry staff as well as for data submitters. As an independent contractor, she created training materials for various registry organizations. |
